I’m in Australia!
It’s absolutely surreal.
The plane ride was a bitch, and every take off and landing made me nauseous and dizzy. I actually puked at one point. My American Airlines flight was a joke, so squished and stuffy. My Qantas flight, from L.A- Sydney was great ( if you disregard the length and the fact that I got sick...) We had dinner and breakfast, a snack kit, all the drinks you wanted, a tv in the back of our chair OnDemand Movies and TV shows, hot towels, blanket, big pillow, and not to mention this aircraft was gigantic!!!When we started to near Sydney it was like you were watching an informational movie about Australia. The big sea waves crashing against the red rock cliffs, dirt roads and tons of trees and beaches. Blue, blue sky.
It’s weird being thrust into such a summer environment, I feel like I’ve slept for months and missed winter...then i see strange bonzie trees and plams. Wild grass and red sand. So many people bike around here, vespa’s line the streets infront of cute cafe’s or European pubs. They make me think of Josh.
When I got to my hostel I was utterly drained, and forced with the reality that i wasn’t as prepared as i thought and i needed to get a lot of stuff. It’s really overwhelming. I cry almost every few hours because I’m on my own, in a new country, and I’ve yet to make any great friends. Sure i’ve met a lot of people, mostly aquantances...but it’s so hard because I had such great friends back home.
I called Josh as soon as I could, and i could barely speak because I was hyperventilating. Two guys beside me ( one from Uk, the other Toronto) said that everyone cries their first phone call home. The more i speak to people, the more they comfort me in telling me the first week is really hard and you feel so home sick, and cry a lot. I want this to pass, I want to get on with enjoying every little thing.
I’ve just been exploring the city, it’s quite big. There is a beautiful river that runs through here, and parks and museums around it. The ocean is about a 30 minute drive from Melbourne... I think- and i’m planning on going to a place called St.Kilda when its a warm, warm day.
Last night I went on a Pub Crawl, I thought it was only going to last 3-4 ish hours, so ignored the fact that I had barely been eating and sleeping. I met this neat group of Perth people living at the Hostel and hung with them most of the night. I only had a couple because one hit me quite hard, and made me feel more sleepy. By the time we got to the third pub, I looked like i had been crying all day(which i pretty much had been) without sleep for 2 days. That’s how you can tell Australians are freaking friendly, they asked me how i was, and my name even though I looked that i might pass out. Here, people just go up to eachother and say ‘hey how are you, i’m ____’ and it’s totally normal.
After crying in the shower, for god knows what reason, I came downstairs for breakfast here ( free ), there was fresh fruit salad, toast, beens, cereal, coffee/tea, and meat stuff that i don’t care too much about.I took a few pictures, not many because I’ve been getting errands out of the way mostly. I plan to have tons more up sometime. The wireless here isn’t the hostels, it’s someone next door so it goes down quite often and you just have to hope it comes back up.
This is the wonderful few from the bar we were at
