the big one nine!

I just got over a week long 'is it bronchitis, is it tonsillitis', who knows? And there is no way I am making the big mission over to the hospital to be given run of the mill penicillin, instead i'll just self diagnose and take leftover's!

So i had my 19th birthday in a country that doesn't understand the hype about turning the big one nine. But luckily, my fellow canadian friend, Adrian, pumped it up and everyone clued in to it. And my birthday landed on a Friday this year, how exciting!
Let me remind you again, it is fall here. And on May 30th it was a beautiful fall day and i actually didn't mind that i was wearing jeans instead of the would-be shorts. Sunshine. Falling leaves, light breeze. Picture Niagara on the Lake at it's best in autumn. Mmmhmm.
So i spent the day reading in the park, and laying in bed watching favorite movies. I left my birthday-me-time to sit with Claire down degraves for coffee. We chat about her prospective jobs and our extended stay in melbourne. And one by one we collected the crew. Harrison poked by in his dirty, mucky work suit. Duffy stressed from collecting money slumped with flat white in hand. We almost missed Andrew slip by. Adrian was too busy ironing shirts and shaking off the stress of the day. But as we chat the shit from the day was shed, and everyone started to look to the night.

The five of them ( adrian, duffy, harrison, andrew, and claire ) had me waiting impatiently in reading about 'britney's new fab body!' They came around the corner all giddy and excited. My first gift was a bag of jelly beans, which is niiice but quite disappointing. Then they gave me the second gift...
I had no reaction when i unrapped the giftwrap and saw that they had actually chipped in and bought me an ipod freaking nano. I was so excited.
Then we started the routine of getting ready. Kate Claire and I showered ( not together ) whilst singing 'lean on me' and torturing the rest of the hostel. We chucked on Jeff Buckley and battled for the tiny wall mirror whilst asking each other for approval of what we were wearing.
We finally finished and met the whole gang on 6th floor to go out for dinner.
Getting on the tram to hit Lygon, we didn't actually know where we were going or did we have a reservation. But Lygon is the italian district and full of great food. Claire directed us to the Spaghetteria, a place she had been previously and enjoyed. The service was very impressive and prompt at first, and then my wine took ages to come, the manager told us racist jokes, and my gnocci came a good five minutes after everyone elses which had us watching the steam slowly fade off of the plates that had come. The food however, was delicious and our dinner luckily was not ruined. Harrison got drunk on beer and topped it off with downing some port, and on the tram ride home i was afraid he was done for the night. Haha. Before we left the table there was, of course, an embarrassing 'Happy Birthday' chant and a huge piece of chocolate cake.
Everyone went in and paid for my share of the bill, yay:) and we headed back to the hostel. Grabbed a slab of beer on the way (24) and hit the roof.
There was a big group of people up there, and we drank until around 11 when we left. We went to St.Jeromes first, and it is unfortunate that they close at 1 because the DJ was great and everyone was having a great time. When the bar went dry, we walked a little ways down the street to Red Violin. I had drinks bought for me all night, as i should, and had some good chats. Around 4 there was some drama that went down, so i grabbed Adrian and Harrison and made them walk me back to the hostel.
We begged Night receptionist for the roof keys ( it closes at 12 ) and spent the remaining hours of the night on the roof. I went to bed around 5:30 am. Amazing big breakfast with Harrison, Adrian and Duffy the next day.
